The VERY VERY rough guide to Tourist Visas to enter Bolivia.

Gravity recently spent a couple of days in the Department of Immigration in Bolivia to try and get some up to date information on the Bolivian tourist Visa situation. We came away not really clear if anyone at all there knows the answers, but at least we have some (with all the usual provisos of the fact that this could change at any time, and might have been wrong when we got it etc, but hopefully it is helpful) and it was roughly accurate on the 15th of January 2008.

Some other important pointers are:
1. Even if your free days allowance is 90 days, sometimes they will stamp you at the border or airport for fewer days (30 or 60), DON'T PANIC, if you need more days, just pop into the La Paz Immigration office and they will take your passport for a day and give you the extra days (up to your free days allowance) for free.
2. Even if you will be in Bolivia for more than your free day allowance, DON'T PANIC, there are two ways you can stay for longer. i. If you are only going to stay a few days over, then you can do NOTHING, at the border you will be charged a fine of 10bs a day (so, like US$1.25) that you overstayed. Pay the amount and you can go, no problem.
ii. If you are going to stay longer, then go to the Department of Immigration and ask them what it will cost for a 30 day extension (they only do them in lots of 30 days), and then do the maths ... is it more, or less than 10bs x the number of days you are going to overstay ... then either buy it or not, depending on which option is cheaper.
3. If you are interested in working in Bolivia for anything other than really casual work, PLEASE for your own sake get a work visa! You can do this when you arrive in Bolivia, and it is a real pain in the arse to get, but not too expensive (if you are staying for 13 months it works out at about US$1/day). IF YOU DO NOT GET A WORK VISA then when your employer doesn't pay you for your work, you have no recourse as you were working ILLEGALLY in the country. We have heard of more than a few unscrupulous employers who adopt this tactic repeatidly in order to keep their wage costs down!!!!! Nota que todos los turistas de USA que no tengan Visa del Consulado Boliviano pueden adquirirla en los Aeropuertos o Fronteras de Bolivia.
Requieren tener:
1- Declaración Jurada de Solicitud de Visa
2- Pasaporte Vigente
3- Reserva de hotel o carta de invitación .
4- Fotocopia del pasaje de ida y vuelta y/o itirinario de viaje.
5- Solvencia económica (Tarjeta de crédito o equivalente válido por el tiempo del viaje).
6- Presentación del certificado internacional de vacuna contra la fiebre amarilla.
7- Pago por la emisión de Visa de $US 100.
