Chacaltaya to Zongo The trail with the World's Greatest Rideable Loss of Altitude (In One Day)!?This particular ride was featured in the December 1999 issue of Men’s Health (Spanish language).
Notable Highlights:
Suitable for: Acclimitised intermediate to advanced riders of average and above fitness and, in particular, adventurous and determined riders. Description: A challenging and exciting ride involving high altitude, snow, steep gravel roads and, eventually, steaming jungle, this ride includes a visit to Chacaltaya, the world’s highest ski-slope at 5,345m above sea level. After driving up to the ski-field we unload the bikes and have time to have a snack, marvel at the ski-slope, and take in the spectacular views of Illimani, Mururata and Huayna Potosí. From the ski-lodge we head back down the Chacaltaya ski-field access road and then turn off to join the Milluni to Zongo road. Once we have joined this gravel road we are driven through an undulating (but largely upwards) section before reaching Zongo Pass. At the Zongo Pass and Dam (the access point for those climbing Huayna Potosí) we can take a rest and soak up the views before setting off again. From Zongo Pass (4,780m) we descend rapidly down the gravel road towards the jungle. As we descend, the temperature rises and the scenery becomes steadily greener and lusher. We can bike as long as desired down this road that slowly flattens out the further we get into the jungle. The lowest point we reach is Zongo Village (1,000m) where we can celebrate the completion of 4,300m of altitude loss!!!!
Other Options: A more technical (and therefore more appropriate for expert riders) and slightly longer option is also available. This involves pushing the bikes up from the ski-lodge approximately 1 km up a rock and ice ridge to the peak of Chacaltaya. From the peak we traverse along ridge tops and over several other minor peaks before selecting one of the many descent options. We descend down either mining roads or walking trails until we reach the Milluni to Zongo road at the foot of Huayna Potosí (6,088m). From here we join up to Zongo Pass and Dam. Total Time Required: A full and long day Approximate Riding Time: 4-6 hours Approximate Downhill: 70-85%, depending on the descent option chosen
