NEW: After extensive testing, Gravity has launched the "Next Big Thing," the GHOST RIDE. This awesome, incredible, spectacular -- and spo-o-o-o-ky -- downhill ride follows abandoned (forsaken?) and infrequently used dirt roads through stunning scenery. Lots of opportunities for playing on the bike, and not so many massive scary drops off the side... but plenty of scary stories along the way! This ride was invented by Gravity (as was the WMDR), and visitng the castle is EXCLUSIVE to Gravity clients. The ride is ideal for anyone with a bit of riding experience who is willing to listen to instruction and coaching, give it a go… and who wants to get off the tourist trap trail. It has proven to be especially popular as a second ride for folks who LOVED the World's Most Dangerous Road and want to try something a bit more challenging, and who want to learn more about riding (ask about our special "repeat offender" discount). It's also for those who feel the World's Most Dangerous Road is a bit too popular, and who want to do something even more brag-worthy. This ride is available EVERY day that we can form a group of four or more riders, so contact us in advance by email to set a date and form a group. We were thinking of posting some photos up about the ride ... but then decided to keep the ride a bit more of a mystery. We have extensive information booklets that contain lots of photos of the ride at our office and in the offices of our authorized agencies.

NEWSFLASH: "As Seen on TV". Gravity recently appeared in two television shows:
Firstly, Word Travels: "Bolivia - High on the Write Stuff" Wed., Jan. 30 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on Canada's Outdoor Life Network. Gravity featured in the premier of "World Travels: The truth behind the bylines", with the Traveling Gonzo himself, ROBIN ESROCK. You can read a short article about his second ride with us here.

Secondly, ABC's Nightline did a Bolivia special that featured Gravity. You can read all about JEFFREY KOFMAN's ride with us in his article published on the ABC Nightline site HERE. This article also includes a photo gallery and a short video. This show will be repeated in New Zealand in the near future, and we will leave a note here as soon as we know when. If you missed the show you can check out the video here.

GREAT NEWS: The Bolivian rainy season is finally coming to an end. we are still facing some rainy days but things have cleared up a lot. This means that we are back to Gravity's normal season prices and packages. The other great news is that all of our new guides are now trained up and ready to rumble down the road. This means that we will be able to run even more rides per day (EXCEPT for the week of 24th of March to 31st of March, when quite a few of us will be racing in Cuzco... please REMEMBER it is worth booking online through this site to guarantee a space during that week). When we receive your reservation we will contact you with all the details you need to enjoy the trip.

A couple of independent comments to keep you on track: The brand new (and in-stock at the Gravity office) Lonely Planet South America on a shoestring (10th Edition, March 2007) guide book recommends Gravity and also says ... "Many other outfits on Sagárnaga offer the La Cumbre to Coroico trip for a few bucks less [than Gravity] but consider what corners are being cut before you go plunging downhill" pg. 193. We couldn't have said it better ourselves! Interestingly, this edition of the guide book also dedicates a whole "boxed text" to the issue of the dangers of going with cut-priced operators down The World's Most Dangerous Road. For your edification we have included it here. We are guessing that the fact that LP recommends us means they count us as a "quality company" and not one of the "less than ideal" ones!:
DEADLY TREADLIES:
Many agencies offering the La Cumbre to Coroico mountain bike plunge give travelers T-shirts plastered with: "I've survived the World's Most Dangerous Road." Keep in mind, the gravel road is just that: it's narrow (just over 3.2m wide) and has precipitous cliffs up to 600m... and there's traffic. At the time of research, eight people (higher figures sometimes quoted) have died doing the 64km trip (with a 3600m vertical drop) and readers have reported close encounters and nasty accidents. Most of these are due to little or no instruction and preparation, and poor quality mountain bikes (beware bogus rebranded bikes). In short, many agencies are less than ideal. Be aware of outfits which deflate prices - cost cutting can mean dodgy brakes, poor quality parts and literally, a deadly treadly. Multilingual guides are necessary for coaching and control. Ask agencies for proof of rescue equipment (rope rescue, harnesses, belays, oxygen), and a pre-departure briefing. Ensure a quality company on this spectacular route before you freewheel your life away.

That's right -- despite all this praise, we haven't fallen asleep at the wheel ... we are busting a gut to become even better! We won't bore you with too many details, but here are some highlights of the improvements introduced since 2006:

1. NEW model Kona mountain bikes arriving all the time. We have new Kona Coilers and Special Edition Kona Coiler Garbanzo's arriving regularly, so our fleet is spanky shiny new. Gravity is proud to be both an official Kona Ride Center ("Groove approved") and the distributor for Kona mountain bikes in Bolivia. Contact us if you want to buy a new or used Kona mountain bike.

2. The best brakes on the planet! Every single one of Gravity's mountain bikes is equipped with Hayes hydraulic disc brakes. No other bicycle tour company in South America, let alone Bolivia, has its entire fleet equipped with such fantastic brakes. Gravity is proud to be the distributor for Hayes Disc Brakes in Bolivia. Contact us if you want to buy Hayes disc brakes. PLEASE NOTE: Gravity is also EXTREMELY PROUD to be able to guarantee that EVERY ONE OF OUR BIKES is equipped with HAYES or EBC original brake pads, and that none of our bikes uses re-machined or resurfaced brake pads.

3. Buy the Gravity Photo CD -– much more than just a photo CD!!!!!! Now it's even easier to show off your daring do to your friends, relatives and jealous work-mates. Our Gravity guides will take high-resolution digital photos (100+) throughout the day, and after the ride we will view these on a television. If you like what you see, you can purchase the CD to pick up from our office or for us to send home to your mum! The Gravity photo CD includes:

  • High-resolution photos and short videos of your day out with Gravity
  • A fancy menu-driven system set to music
  • "Best-of" photos, and photos from Gravity's other great rides
  • A full-color fancy sticker on the CD
  • A full-color fold-out presentation booklet and CD sleeve to keep the CD safe

Visit the GRAVITY STORE and you can purchase a Gravity t-shirt to be mailed to you.

5. The FANTASTIC Gravity guides are better than ever ... All the Gravity guides race for TEAM GRAVITY! We have cleaned out the La Paz downhill race series for years, as well as taking out a pile of medals at the national champs!!!!
